Resignation in Spanish Football over Mocking Muslim Players
Spanish football has been rocked by fresh controversy after video showing a lower division club president chasing Muslim players with Iberian pork triggered widespread backlash forcing his resignation.
The incident has intensified scrutiny on discrimination in the country’s game.
The controversy centers on Javi Poves president of Madrid-based CD Colonia Moscardó, a fourth tier club.
In a video he posted on social media and later deleted, Poves appeared promoting Iberian pork products before chasing Muslim players while shouting at them to eat pork.
The footage quickly spread online and drew strong criticism from fans, media outlets and observers, many of whom described the act as offensive and discriminatory rather than humorous.
The timing added to the tension, with Spanish football already under pressure following several recent incidents involving racism.
Poves attempted to contain the situation by releasing a three minute video in which he described the incident as a “misunderstood joke”
“It was meant to bring some humor ... I did not intend to offend any religion or person” he said.

The explanation did little to ease the backlash. Critics argued the act crossed clear lines and reflected a lack of respect toward players’ beliefs, with calls growing for accountability.
Under mounting pressure, Poves officially resigned as club president, although he remains part of the board. In a final video message, he suggested he would step away from football entirely.
“I will start a new chapter in my life ... I’ll grow tomatoes and take care of sheep” he said.
As of now, the Spanish Football Federation has not issued official statement on the incident despite increasing calls for investigation.
